A Decadent Gothic BJD Manicure

BJD manicures are one my favourite parts of customization.  They are much easier than face-ups, but the effect of blushed or manicured hands is almost as impactful.  Even if a BJD is always in suits or long dresses, their hands can usually be seen.

I've been wanting to update Elena's hands for a while, and just finished reading Carmilla, which put me in the mood for some Gothic, Evil-Regal-style nails.

Now, I am by no means an expert at nail art or manicures, so I started by doing an image search for inspiration.  Once that was done, I made a couple of rough sketches to test out my idea for a gothic manicure.

I decided to go with the red, black, and silver version because Elena has quite a few red clothes.

This is what her nails looked like before I started.  These are the Dollmore Model F Vampire hands, so they come with long talon-like nails.  :-D  Dollmore painted her nails dark purple as part of her fullset-- and I liked the colour very much, but as I said, her wardrobe tends toward red and black, and the old manicure was starting to chip from three and half years of use.

First, I cleaned off the old Dollmore manicure, prepped the hands with several base coats of MSC, and then started with a dark red acrylic.

This was probably the most stressful part.  I decided to paint the front and back of the resin nail, and had to be careful about making a clean line where the nail meets the finger on both sides.

When that layer was done, and all the nails were red, I thought the look was already quite nice.  I worried that adding more would be too much.  While I pondered whether to go on with my plans for the Decadent Gothic BJD Manicure, I sealed the hands with more MSC.

An excellent friend of mine advised simplicity and elegance.  I considered the matter thoroughly.

When the MSC coats were dry, I decided to go ahead with the silver cuticles.  At least I could wipe them off if they looked bad.

So I went at the cuticles with my tiny brush and silver acrylic.

And wowww!  I love how cold, shiny silver looks against the dark red.  More is more, sometimes.  Next, I painted the black tips.

Now, the plan was to add some silver beads.  Even though I was already pleased at the red, black, and silver, I had especially purchased some micro beads.  Most nail art decals and crystals are over-sized on BJD hands (yes, even on SD hands with long vampire nails), and that was not the look I was after.

Once I started trying to attach the beads, I quickly gave up my notions of more than one micro bead per hand.  The micro beads were very exasperating to pick up and place on the nails.  I imagine that a more practiced person would not have too much trouble, but alas, that person was not me.

This is what the hands looked like when they were more or less finished, and at my favourite stage.

After this, I applied a very thick layer of gloss medium to secure the micro beads.  I prefer the matte look in the picture above, but that would not at all be practical for a doll whose hands will be going in and out of tight sleeves.  I'll be posting more pictures of Elena with her new manicure soon.

Until then, that is the story of my first gothic-inspired BJD manicure.

Thanks very much for reading! :0)

Elena's Third Box day

This week, on Dec. 31st, it was Elena's box-day.  Three years ago yesterday, I posted Elena's box-opening on Den of Angels.

I made her a little satin collar with a drop-shaped pendant to celebrate our three year anniversary.  You can see it in some of the pictures below.  I am intending for it to be part of a larger costume project that I have underway for her (there will be updates in the near-ish future).

As I have stated before, Elena was my first BJD, so her box-day is not only the day of her arrival, but is also the day that I saw my first BJD in person.  I'm sorry the lighting is not ideal in these pictures.  In what I fear might become an annual tradition, Elena could not be persuaded to move to a better location.  She spent the day lying in bed and moping over the hideous, awful, inexorable progress of time.

The Hospital Visit

After being increasingly sick throughout the month of April, I had to go back to the hospital.    When I had been there for a few days and my condition was good enough that I could do more than just lie in bed, my mother brought Elena to visit me.

We took a little walk around the hallways near the SSU, where I spent most of my time.

I don't think I can ever say how grateful I am to my wonderful parents for their support during this ordeal.  I must also say that I was frequently extremely glad to be sick in Canada rather than elsewhere, and that the RNs Re---, Sa---, De---, Go---, Pa---, and Se--- were fantastic.

Thank-you everyone for making a difficult time a lot better!

I decided to do a bit of a reprise of Elena and Aurora from last year's Women's Day post. Again, it's nothing elaborate, but today seems like a good day to think about the friendship between these two. I tend to see them as offering each other a complimentary balance.

Elena's Second Box day

* * *

This is now the second year that I've been lucky enough to have Elena in my collection. Last year, I re-posted her box-opening to celebrate. I'm afraid she does not enjoy being the 'oldest one,' and given that her Box day comes on the heels of the New Year, she is rather pouting (and possibly hung-over) in these pictures.

Mouse King Vs. Nutcracker

It was the night before Christmas.

Madeline and Aurora were sitting by the tree, enjoying the lights and presents.

Aurora: Do you hear something?

Madeline: Wait, yes, a strange rustling.

Rustle. Rustle. Rustle.

The mysterious sound grew louder.

And then suddenly, a noble nutcracker appeared.

He wore a red and gold jacket, and tall black boots.

The Nutcracker: Good evening, ladies.

Have you perchance seen my nemesis?

He is called the Mouse King,

and no one could be more dreadful.

Madeline: I can't recall seeing anyone like that.

Aurora: Nor can I.

But then, just as the ladies answered the noble nutcracker...

They heard more rustling...

And the Dreadful Mouse King appeared!!!

The Mouse King: Bonsoir, everyone!

The Nutcracker: So we meet again.

Never fear, ladies, I will protect you from the dreadful mouse King!

Aurora: He doesn't seem so dreadful to me.

Madeline: Mr. Mouse King, are you really French?

The Mouse King: Mais oui, mademoiselle! Yet I am trying to learn the English.

Perhaps you would be kind to help me practice?

At this friendly reply, the two ladies jumped out of their seats to admire their visitor.

Aurora: Look at his handsome whiskers!

Madeline: I think it is wonderful that he is French!

The Mouse King: Oh, ladies, how kind you are.

The Nutcracker: Confound you, Mouse King. You do this to me every year!

Humph. Humph. Humph.

Mouse King: Now, Sir, I am sorry. One should not be bitter at the Christmas.

I wish you very well and good cheer.

But the poor nutcracker went away in extreme annoyance.

He was lucky, however, for the noise had woken Elena.

And since Elena was no stranger to jealously,

she listened to the nutcracker's tale with great sympathy.

A Thief of Clothes

Mr Black: And so I found many treasures hidden in the cave, but there were too many for me to carry home.

Marlowe: You must have been disappointed.

Mr Black: Most terribly!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Eric: Pardon the interruption, but have either of you seen my clothes?

Marlowe: Have you tried the clothing drawer?

Mr Black: Perhaps ask Elena, she has a history of eating clothes.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The most familiar example of reptile molting is when snakes shed their skin.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Elena: I like to think of new clothes as an opportunity to choose different identities.

Aurora: His trousers are too short on you.

Elena: All the better to display my toes. Next, I will try the jacket.

Eric: Ahem.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Eric: Why are you wearing my clothes?

Elena: I have no recollection of wearing your clothes. Especially not your jacket.

Eric: But the empirical evidence is here. And I have a witness.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Aurora: Even I am not sure how she suddenly came to be wearing the jacket.

Elena: Why would I wear trousers that are too short for my legs? Your accusations are absurd.

Eric: Oh. You know, Aurora, I am suddenly reminded of a dream.

Aurora: What was your dream?

Eric: There was a garden in Spring.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I feared there would be serpents in the garden. Instead, there was a lady amongst the flowers.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

She told me not to be afraid.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I felt that she could help me, and I confessed to her all my deepest regrets and wishes.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

When she had heard everything, she reached out with her small hand,

and told me to drink the dew from a flower.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I woke with the taste of an August sunset on my lips.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Aurora: I had the same dream. The sunset tasted like Chardonnay.

Elena: This morning I had a nightmare.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Eric appeared, wearing my favourite dress.

He left me his cast-off clothes.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Everyone said that he looked better in my dress than I ever had.

I asked for my dress back.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I pleaded on bended knee.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I offered him treasures untold.

Golden rings, radiant jewels, and ancient secrets.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But he said he would keep the dress.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So, to cheer myself, I decided to see how well his clothes suited me.

Marlowe: that case, Elena, listen to a re-occuring vision that I have frequently reflected upon.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

It is an unseasonably warm evening.

So warm that you are not wearing many things.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Yet even being thus sensibly attired, you complain of the heat.

I advise you to remove all of your remaining garments and to instead wear three drops of French perfume.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

And you agree that this is sage advice.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

What do you suppose this delightful vision could possibly mean?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Elena: Probably that you really do think Eric would look better in my dress.

Marlowe: What? :-O No...

Eric: I have no desire whatever to wear anyone's dress.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Elena: Even if it made you irresistible?

Eric: There is no one I am trying to seduce. Here.

Later

Mr. Black: So what have we learned today?

Elena: Not to give undue credence to peculiar dreams. And to ask before I borrow other people's items.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Eric: To be more careful of where I keep my clothes and to stay out of Elena's dreams, if I can help it.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Aurora: I have been reminded of the importance of trust and of the many mysteries in the world.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Mr. Black: And you, Marlowe?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Marlowe: Well, disregarding that Elena's actions may be less irrational than they first appear . . .

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

. . . chiefly that you could not carry home all the treasures from the cave.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Mr. Black: Egads, after all those words, I did not expect such an insightful insight at the end!

Elena: I like how you explained everything, Marlowe.

Marlowe: Thank-you. It was nothing, really.

Notes: It's finally done! This photostory took so many detours, re-writes, and re-shoots, I have almost lost track. I enjoyed seeing (nearly) everyone tell their own mini-narratives. After this though, I may try to write slightly less strange photostories.

In other news, I have a Raurencio Studio Adonis head on order and am planning to try it on an EID female body. It's a rather expensive experiment though, so unless my mind is boggled with the amazingness, I might not be keeping the body and/or head.
